Glass Balustrades Installation

glass balustrade on restaurant space

How to Revamp Your Restaurant Space With a Glass Balustrade Installation

Many restaurants have outdoor spaces where they set tables and position sun umbrellas or shade sails. These spaces become the ideal place to enjoy a meal, especially when the weather is good. If you are a hotel or restaurant owner and want to create a comfortable and safe outdoor place for your guests to enjoy a drink or meal, you should consider getting a glass balustrade installation.

These features can be custom-designed for installation in areas such as patios, decks, terraces and balcony spaces. Today, you will find that there are a number of glass balustrading options to choose from and a good supplier would be able to provide customised options that complement the look ambience of the rest of your restaurant, café or club areas. There are a number of ways in which these installations can be used to lend a very attractive look to the open areas of your restaurant; here are a few ideas:

#1 For patios and decks

If you have a large open elevated space that’s part of your restaurant, you should consider installing a glass balustrade all along the periphery. Since these are largely glass installations, they blend in well with all types of settings. Regardless of whether you have a classic-styled restaurant or one that’s designed on a more modernistic style, a glass balustrade will fit right in. You have the option to choose between a framed, semi-framed or frameless feature.

#2 For terraced garden areas

Many restaurants have terraced areas, some with more than one level. This type of setting provides the perfect opportunity to get a glass balustrade installed. You can get frameless glass balustrade installations fitted along the edge of each level. Not only does this act as a safety railing, but helps demarcate the area, and lends a more orderly and neat look to the outdoor spaces.

In fact, if you have smoking and non-smoking zones in your restaurant, you should consider getting a glass balustrade to divide these spots. For added privacy you can choose to get a tinted or frosted glass installation. Alternatively, you can consider placing large potted palms or other hedge type plants along the periphery. Not only will this add some greenery and freshness to the space, but will increase the functionality of the available space.

#3 Outdoor staircases

If your restaurant has an elevated deck leading out from the indoor dining areas, you may have stairs leading down from the decking. From a safety perspective, it’s important to have a glass balustrade built along the stairs. This installation can be straight or curved and can be custom designed to fit the staircase installation.
The styling of the glass balustrade will have to be in sync with the look of the other features in your restaurant. We take care to install high-grade railings and balustrades, using 12-18mm thick glass panels; in fact, if there is a lot of traffic here, we may also recommend the use of glass that’s up to 22 mm in thickness.

We are extremely focused on maintaining high quality standards and make sure that all the installations are in line with Australian Standards. We work closely with you to understand what your specific requirements are, and then provide solutions that match your requirement and fit into your budget. Regardless of which way you look at it, your restaurant will get a very stunning look with a glass balustrade installation.

custom glass balustrades for private spaces

Tips to Use Custom Glass Balustrades to Create Private Spaces

Glass balustrade installations are a growing trend and many property owners now choose to get this installation for their homes and commercial spaces. Adding a custom glass balustrade to your deck, patio, poolscape, balcony, terrace or veranda is a great way to create a unique look on your property.

It’s also the one way in which you can get the safety you need, without marring the look of the structure, or blocking the view. In fact, if you get frosted glass panels for these balustrades, you can easily create private spaces that are discreetly tucked out of view. This is a great advantage if you live in a locality that has other homes in close vicinity.

These balustrades can be built to your requirements and we ensure that the design complements the look of your home structure. As mentioned earlier, these balustrades provide you the functionality and safety you need, without compromising on the aesthetics.

Types of glass balustrades

If you are considering getting glass balustrade installations, you will find there are a number of options to choose from such as:

Framed balustrade

This is a very sturdy structure that is made of multiple glass panels with framing on all sides. This type of installation is ideal for high traffic areas and we use thick gauge stainless steel hardware and framing in the feature.

Semi-framed

If you prefer a more open look but don’t want to take any chances with stability and sturdiness, you can opt for a semi-framed installation. This installation is sleeker than the framed feature and can be customised to your requirement.

Frameless

This is a very popular option and many people are now opting for it. A frameless balustrade fits in beautifully into any setting which makes it a very versatile feature. It is also a little more expensive than the other two options, but is a low maintenance installation that provides an unhindered view of the outdoor areas of your property and the scenery outside.

Regardless of the option you choose, you want to be sure that the installation is sturdy and strong and that it is able to weather the climatic conditions that exist in your area. This also means using the right kind of glass. There are glass panels of different thicknesses and you can pick that based on the application the balustrade is going to be used in.

Where can you install glass balustrades?

We will provide you all the information you need and show you samples of the different types of glass that can be used for your specific requirement. If you want more privacy on your patio, you can use framed installations with opaque glass panels. These installations are ideal for:

Patios

This shades the space in a very effective manner and provides you privacy as you entertain guests and relax or dine outdoors.

Balcony

A balcony is an ideal spot to relax at the end of a busy work day. But if this feature faces another house, you can’t use it in an optimal manner. We can install frosted/opaque/tinted glass balustrade that are designed so you can enjoy these spaces without worrying about being seen.

Indoor lofts

Some homes have indoor lofts that are part of a larger room. Installing a glass balustrade using opaque glass is a great way to get the privacy you need without compromising on the light and ventilation aspects.

glass fencing for poolscapes

Why Glass Fencing is Best For Poolscapes

If you are considering getting a fence installed along the periphery of your poolscape, you must have checked out what kind of materials and installations are available in the market. You will find there are wood, aluminium, metal and glass fences to choose from. While timber and metal are sturdy materials, many people are now opting for glass fences; and there are some distinct reasons for this.

When you want any outdoor installation for your property, you want to be sure that it will be able to weather climatic changes and that it won’t get impacted by the pool water too. Wood tends to get affected by water and it requires constant maintenance and painting. Metal fences are sturdy, but they tend to rust over time. Vinyl is also used in outdoor applications but it can eventually fade and warp.

Why opt for glass fencing?

The one material that stays unaffected by all these factors is glass. Take a look at why this is the best material for poolscapes:

Durability

Glass may seem fragile, but when you choose panels of the right thickness, and the installation is done in the right manner, you can be sure that the installation will last for a number of years without any trouble.

Safety

The primary reason for getting a fence installed around the pool is safety. You don’t want your kids or pets wandering into this area unsupervised. Even if you have older children, you want to be able to supervise them when they are using the pool and getting a clear glass fence installed is the best way to do that.

Security

If you have a wooden or metal fence, kids can easily clamber over it. However, when you get a glass fence installed, you don’t have to worry about this aspect; since the surfaces are smooth, kids and pets can’t climb over the fence.

Openness

Wooden and metal fences block the view and make spaces look smaller. On the other hand, a glass fence demarcates the space well and provides safety and security without compromising on the openness. In fact, if you have a smaller yard and get a glass fence installed, you will find that the space looks larger and more attractive.

Low maintenance

This is one more aspect that homeowners look for when they are getting any feature for their home. Glass is very easy to maintain and it only has to occasionally be cleaned with a diluted soap solution and water. It doesn’t get impacted by the water and stays in good conditions for a very long time.

Value for money

The upfront cost of glass fencing is a little higher than wooden or vinyl fencing. But when you take the maintenance and longevity factors into consideration you will find that they provide value in the long term.

Aesthetics and versatility

Glass is a very versatile option and it complements the look of different types of outdoor spaces. Regardless of whether you have a formal or casual styled yard space, glass will enhance the appearance of your property. It is also a perfect option if your home is situated close to the ocean as the glass doesn’t get impacted by the salty sea air. Since we use high-grade, corrosion resistant stainless steel frames and hardware in the work, you don’t have to worry about things like rusting and deterioration.

It’s important to get your glass balustrades installed from credible professionals like the ones at Quantum Frameless Glass. For any more information about our glass balustrades, call us at this number – 1300 282 248. You can also contact us using this online form.

residential glass balustrades

Things To Focus On While Considering a Glass Balustrade For Your Home

Glass balustrades and fencing are now being used on commercial and residential properties alike. They lend a very open look to the property and complement the appearance of structures of different styles. It’s important to hire expert professionals for the job and they will ensure that they customise the design and installations as per your requirement.

However, it’s also a good idea to be aware of what aspects you should focus on when you are getting a glass balustrade installed. Here are some important things to keep in view:

#1 The Location Matters

When you are planning to get a balustrade installed, it’s important to think very carefully about where it should be located; this is because its specification and design will be customised accordingly. The base/ground on which this feature will be fitted, will decide what kind of installation is required.

The styling, design and specs of a balustrade that’s to be built on a strong and level deck will be quite different from one that’s to be built on a terrace or patio. Aside from this, the other factor that has to be taken into consideration is how exposed the installation will be.

If the balustrade is to be fitted in a marine/coastal environment or along the periphery of a poolscape, it would have to be made of more resilient materials. The company that is handling the job for you will ensure that they use heavy-grade products and thicker panels etc.; this adds to the longevity of the installation.

#2 The Right Balance of Style and Budget

Glass balustrades, especially ones that are made using very thick glass panels and thick gauge framing and hardware can be expensive. However, they are also very strong, durable and low maintenance, which makes them have value for money. The price of the balustrade will also be dependent on the kind of styling you want and the frameless ones are more expensive than the semi-framed and framed installations.

When you are deciding which installation to opt for, you should balance both these factors and zero in on the type of balustrade you want. If you like the look of frameless glass balustrades, but find that they don’t fit into your budget, you can opt for installations that have mini posts.

#3 Make the Right Design Choices

When you are considering getting a glass balustrade installed in your home, it’s important that you conduct a certain amount of online research. You will find many designs and styles of balustrades; you can save those images and show them to the balustrade installers that are going to handle the job for you.

They will inspect the site, ascertain whether a particular installation would fit in the available space and will then provide you quotes for it. When you provide detailed information about your preferences and budget, the installers are able to provide you the kind of customised solutions you need.

#4 The Safety Aspect

While you are sure to want a glass balustrade that looks stunning, elegant and sophisticated, you also need to take the safety aspect into account. The questions that need to be asked at this point are:

  • Where is the balustrade going to be used?
  • Who is going to be using the feature?
  • Are there any potential safety concerns?

For example, if you are getting a glass balustrade installed on a staircase, it’s necessary to add a sturdy handrail to the structure.

types of hardware used in glass balustrade installations

Types of Hardware Used in Glass Balustrade Installations

Glass balustrades are increasingly being used in various residential and commercial settings and there are a number of different styles to choose from such as framed, semi-frameless and frameless installations. The type of installation you choose will be dependent on the space it’s going to be fitted in, and your functionality and aesthetic preferences.

To a certain degree the design elements in the space will dictate the kind of balustrades you will use. When you contact the glass balustrade company for this installation, they will visit your premises and understand what your requirements are. They will also survey the space where the balustrade is to be installed and provide you design options and advice about which system would work best for you.

The hardware

While it’s very important to choose the right kind of glass for the installation, it’s equally important that the right kind of hardware be chosen for the fitting; this includes base clamps, connectors, glass adapter systems and handrails. Different types of fixing methods could be used in the installation, such as:

  • Spigot fixing
  • Pin standoff fixing
  • Channel fixing
  • Concealed fascia clamp fixing

A credible and reputed company will always ensure that the hardware used in the balustrade installations are tested to meet the Australian Building Standards. Let’s take a look at how different hardware is incorporated into the installation:

Glass balustrade clamps

These are available in standard as well as custom sizes and are used to hold the glass panels in the frame. They are typically made of high-grade stainless steel and enhance the aesthetics and structural integrity of the balustrade.

Handrails

There are a number of different types of handrails available as well, and you can choose from options such as offset flat bar SS handrails, offset tubular SS handrails, capping top rail and timber handrails.

Glass Adapters

These adapters are used in slab and post fixing installations. They are made of high-grade stainless steel and are suitable for outdoor and indoor use.

Glass Adapters with Base Plate

The adapters with a base plate are available in non-adjustable and adjustable variants. The base plates help create the right balance between the transparency and elegance of glass and the detailing of stainless steel.

Base Glass Clamps & Glass Spigots

The steel spigots are made of high strength stainless steel and the installation is very easy. There are base glass clamps that can be used in balustrade systems, fencing and glass barriers too.

Anchor Bolt Fixings

Threaded, high-performance anchor bolt fixtures are specially designed to suit different head shapes; they are used when the glass balustrades are being installed in a concrete base.

Other considerations

As mentioned earlier, the kind of hardware used in the installation will be dependent on the location, size, type of glass panels used and the setting the balustrade system is to be installed in. In addition to the hardware to be used, there are some other considerations that have to be taken into account, such as:

Size of the glass panels

If large, toughened glass panels are being used in the installation, heavy-gauge SS clamps would have to be used in the structure.

Styling

You can choose from glossy/matt finishes as well as round/square shaped clamps.

Rubber protectors

The installers will ensure that strong rubber protectors are used between the glass panels and the clamps.

Positioning

The stainless steel clamps and the rest of the hardware should be positioned correctly. In some cases, corner clamps may be required to lend strength to the installation.

As you can see, there are a number of things that have to be accounted for when hardware is being chosen for your glass balustrades. how glass balustrades add to the style quotient of commercial spaces

How Glass Balustrades Add to the Style Quotient to a Commercial Space

As a commercial property owner, you want to ensure that your establishment has the aesthetic, practical and durable installations and features. Today, glass balustrades are being used in various commercial spaces as they have all these attributes and add to your property’s potential as well.

Stylish glass balustrades

An increasing number of builders, architects and interior designers are now using these features in the interior and exterior designs of their commercial projects; take a look at why this is so:

  • Glass balustrades are extremely versatile in that they complement the look of various settings and create a very dramatic look in entrance halls, staircases, internal and external balconies and large hallway areas too.
  • Modern interior design leans very heavily on open floor plan concepts; and glass lends itself very beautifully to these themes. It’s a great way to open up the interiors and it looks perfect in contemporary-design spaces.
  • It adds beauty to the structure without obstructing the view in any way.
  • Glass is often an integral design concept in new build structures. However, it also works stunningly well in heritage building refurbishing projects. It adds a very unique touch to the structure without taking away from the building’s original architecture.

Some considerations

While glass is an excellent material that offers a number of benefits, it is also quite a complex product. When it’s being used in glass balustrades, it’s crucial to get professional advice from expert surveyors and reliable operators in the field. The customised solutions we provide ensure that the glass balustrade specifications will match your function and aesthetic needs. The different aspects that have to be taken into consideration are:

  • You can choose from framed, semi-framed or frameless glass balustrades for your commercial building.
  • If you want balustrades for high traffic settings such as a shopping malls, commercial buildings or schools, we recommend that you opt for thicker glass balustrades.
  • Some design concepts call for curved glass, handrail installations or staircase balustrades, and we cater to all these specific requirements too.
  • We ensure that high grade, toughened and laminated glass is used in these installations and that the hardware is of the highest quality.

Types of glass balustrade fixing systems

Bolted systems

In these the glass panels of the balustrade are fixed using custom-designed bolts. These are made to match the weight and size of the glass of your frameless balustrade.

Channel Systems

The glass panels are set in customised, side-fixed or floor-mounted metal channels to create a frameless glass balustrade system.

Post & Rail Systems

Some customers want more robust glass balustrades and prefer getting semi-framed systems. We use SS balustrade posts that have glass panel infills.

Resin-Set Systems

The glass panels in these systems are firmly set in floor channels and are held in place with a hard resin. This provides a seamless finish and since the frame is concealed, it provides a very slick look to the installation.

Clamping Systems

In this system, mild steel plates are used to hold the glass panels. Metal or timber may be used in the concealed system installation. This is an entirely customised structure in which the mild steel plates are bolted directly to the staircase sides.

Our work process

Since most glass balustrade projects are very specific to the setting and there are a number of customised options and fixing systems, it’s important to consult balustrade specialists such as the ones at Quantum Frameless Glass. When you call us with your requirement, our experts will visit your property, discuss your requirements and provide various system options. Once you have approved a design and quote, we will schedule the installations as per the agreed-upon date and time.

components and features of structural glass balustrades

The Nitty-Grittys of a Structural Glass Balustrade

If you are considering getting glass fencing installed on your property, and have conducted some online research, you will find the term “structural glass” mentioned a lot. Many people wonder what this means and whether these systems are any different from the standard glass installations that are seen on residential and commercial properties. Here we take a closer look at what these features are and what is involved in their installation.

The components and features of structural glass balustrades

Frameless section

In frameless glass balustrades, the panels of glass don’t become just an infill panel. They are actually used as part of the balustrade structure. This is why the terms structural glass and frameless glass balustrades are used interchangeably and they mean one and the same thing. Some providers also refer to these as cantilevered glass systems. The feature is fairly simple in terms of the idea that used in its structure; it’s based on 2 main engineering principles:

  • Strong glass panels that have the structural integrity to bear the loads and bending movements that are imposed on it in any setting
  • It has a sturdy base that has clamps which hold the glass panels in place

Handrails and top-capping

If you get a frameless glass/structural glass balustrade installed on your property, the structure needs to have handrails, in accordance with the Australian Standard AS1288-2006. The handrail is the top section of the balustrade placed on the panels. It provides support to the structure, holds the panels together and adds to the strength and durability of the feature. The handrail you choose should be aesthetically appealing too and your glass balustrade installer will provide design options for you to choose from.

Glass

The glass panels used in this installation aren’t made of standard glass such as one that’s used in doors or windows on a property. The glass we use in structural balustrade systems is 15mm-18mm laminated and toughened glass that goes through a specialised tempering process. This adds to its resilience and makes it resistant to breakage in comparison to regular annealed glass.

It’s mandatory to use glass of 15mm thickness even in residential applications. In commercial applications such as in malls, restaurants, bars, pubs and discotheques etc., thicker glass panels (18mm- 25mm) would have to be installed. In case the panels suffer a heavy impact and break, they don’t shatter into pointed shards like the latter. Instead, it breaks up into squarish pieces with round edges, which makes it a much safer installation in any setting.

The base of the structural glass balustrade

This part is called the “shoe profile”. It’s the most vital part of the entire feature and has to be designed and installed with care. It has a strong “U” channel that’s made of custom-designed aluminium extrusions. The toughened glass panels are positioned in this U-channel and fitted with epoxy or a cement-type material.

Semi-frameless section

Some operators forgo the epoxy altogether and use shoe profiles that have hammered-in wedges or pressure-screwed clamps. This process is less labour-intensive and cleaner than the epoxy method. These base profiles could be affixed to the balcony structure using concrete, steel or some other material.

The fixtures and base profiles of frameless glass balustrades have to be custom-designed for each site; this helps ensure that they will be able withstand the extreme loads that would be transferred from the glass panels.

glass pool fencing

Installing a Glass Pool Fence? Here are Some Pointers

Glass fences are increasingly becoming the installation of choice over ones made of traditional materials such as metal and timber. Today, most architects and custom home builders are including these features in their projects. Unwieldy iron bars and large, unattractive wooden beams are passé and the focus is on creating elegant outdoor spaces that look stunning with glass fencing on them.

You can choose from framed, semi-framed and frameless glass fences. The latter offer a very open and expansive look to any space and add to the aesthetics of your poolscape. However, installation of glass fencing isn’t an easy job. Here are some pointers that you should keep in view while installing these features on your property.

Things to Consider when installing a glass pool fence

#1 Size of your pool

This is a very important aspect and some glass fences are just not suitable for larger pools as they don’t have the required tensile strength. If the area is larger, a larger number of boards and strips will be required. Since these fixtures may not be available in larger sizes, you would have to get the fence custom-designed.

#2 Professional Vs. DIY installation

You would have to take into account the cost involved in hiring professionals for the job compared to doing the job yourself. You need to have a certain amount of knowledge and skill with reference to installing a glass fence. The task can be quite challenging, time-consuming and requires specialised tools.

If you don’t have these tools or can’t find the time to complete the installation satisfactorily within a stipulated timeframe, it’s better to hire the services of glass fencing professionals for the job. Experienced contractors will be able to tackle the job skilfully and ensure that the installation is strong and long-lasting

#3 Purpose of the glass fencing

Are you installing the fence as a protective barrier to keep kids and pets away from the pool, or are you getting this installation purely for aesthetic purposes? The purpose of the installation will largely dictate which materials will be used and what the thickness of the glass panels will be. If you have kids or pets at home you would also have to ensure that the installation doesn’t have any sharp edges or corners.

#4 Commercial or residential installation

While factors like strength and durability will stay constant regardless of whether the fence is to be installed on a residential or commercial property; commercial property owners like these features to be a little more appealing, while residential property owners tend to focus more on the functionality factor.

#5 Opaque or transparent

Some people prefer transparent glass; this lets in more light and lends more openness to the space. However, of you want some privacy; you can opt for frosted (opaque) glass panels. The installation process and all other aspects stay the same.

#6 Local rules and regulations

In some places, there could be government rules and regulations with reference to the height of the glass, distance of the fence from your pool, the layout of electrical lines etc. The company you hire for the job would have to take this into consideration when they are handling your glass pool fencing installation project.

Contact the glass pool fencing experts

Frameless Glass Balustrade

The Different Components of a Frameless Glass Balustrade

When you are getting glass balustrades installed, you want to be sure that the best components are used in the work, as that ensures the strength and durability of the installation. A balustrade essentially acts like a horizontal support structure or a handrail. Frameless glass was designed typically for pool fencing. However, frameless fencing has very clean and crisp lines.

These, in combination with the fact that this installation provides a very clear view of the outdoors, made architects and home builders use frameless glass balustrades for various other settings like balconies and internal staircases and landing spaces too. These frameless glass balustrades became replacements for traditional aluminum or framed glass balustrades.

Various components

In addition to high-grade tempered glass, there are a number of other parts that go into making glass fencing and balustrades. Let’s take a closer look at what these are:

Most components that are used in frameless glass pool fences can also be used in installing frameless glass balustrades. The spigots are used in both the features and so is the tempered 12mm glass. When it comes to the minimum height of the balustrades, most installers will use 1 meter high installations. However, some people also choose to use pool fencing glass that’s 1200mm high glass pool fencing.

That’s because when a person is seated in the balcony, the handrail is then above the eye-level, which gives you a clear an unhindered view, compared to an installation in which the handrail is positioned at a height of only 1 meter (which impedes the view). Today, frameless glass balustrades and outdoor fencing is increasingly being used in residential and commercial applications across Sydney.

Handrails

These handrails are made of SS as the material doesn’t corrode, stain or rust easily in the manner that standard steel does. However, if you are installing the balustrade in an outdoor environment that has high salinity or an environment that has a poor circulation environment, it’s important to use high grade stainless steel handrails.

There are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel and resistance to corrosion are required. These are continuous small oval handrails that are available in variants such as:

  • Polished one-way slotted tubes – these are all siliconed to the top of glass panels
  • Side mounted tubes that are attached to the glass panels with small stainless steel stand-off brackets
  • Polished SS handrail brackets – these have wider flat/round saddles
  • Round or flat saddle – this bracket is also side-mounted to the glass.

Fixing methods

There are a number of different methods of fixing the frameless glass balustrades, based on the surface that’s available. The method that’s the most cost-effective and popular is:

  • Square stainless steel spigots
  • Round stainless steel spigots
  • Face-mounted SS standoff brackets

These fixtures are ideal for fixing toughened glass and they add to the strength and durability of the structure.

Glass clamps

These are available in various specifications and can suit glass that is 6m-18mm thick, based on your required installation. There are different types of clamps available:

  • Brushed satin SS polished glass clamps that are ideal for outdoor applications
  • Mirror Polished and brushed satin SS polished glass clamps
  • Zinc die-cast Glass Clamps. These are typically used in indoor applications. When they are used in external applications, they have to be powder-coated

All the clamps also come with rubber gaskets that are made to hold glass panels of various thicknesses.
